Why Do I Need Antioxidants?
Everyone needs antioxidants to help prevent damage to their
body. (If you have not read about free radicals on this site you
may wish to read that first.) Free radicals are ubiquitous and are
constantly attacking your body from the outside (sunlight,
pollution, electromagnetic radiation, etc.), and due to normal
metabolism and living—attacking you from the inside. Free
radicals are unstable molecules that through chain reaction cause
millions of free radicals that damage your proteins, cells,
tissues, and organs. They cause aging, degenerative changes,
inflammation and disease. They cut your lifespan short.
Antioxidants prevent damage by protecting the very proteins,
cells, tissues, and organs that are targeted by free radicals. The
antioxidants prevent or minimize damage. They have been
scientifically proven to prevent dementia, blindness, heart
disease, degenerative diseases and a variety of cancers.
Everyone should take antioxidants to optimize their health and
longevity. What good is it to just live long if you are unhealthy?
Today there is no reason why most people could not live to be 100
years old. More and more people are living to be 100. By the year
2020 it is estimated that there will be 1 million centenarians
(people that are 100 or older). The important goal is not to
arrive at age 100, but rather to arrive at age 100 enjoying life
with all your abilities and facilities intact.
Antioxidants Prevent Aging
Antioxidants are proven to help prevent or halt the damage from
aging. Free radicals attack your proteins, cells, tissues, and
organs. They attack your genetic code. The damage causes
degenerative changes that destroy tissue. The free radicals also
cause inflammation. Everything starts to snowball and deteriorate.
This is the reason people lose vision as they age. The free
radical damage in the brain causes the blood brain barrier
(specialized blood vessels that allow nutrients in and keep toxins
out) to break down. Toxins and free radicals get access to brain
tissue and cause damage and changes that lead to dementia.
Cartilage breaks down and people suffer from arthritis pain and
limited mobility.
Antioxidants help prevent this damage and improve brain
function. They protect the blood brain barrier and keep the brain
bathed in nutrients rather than toxins.
Antioxidants help prevent the aging process by strengthening
your immune system as well.
Antioxidants Prevent Heart Disease
There have been numerous studies showing that antioxidants
prevent heart disease. These studies have focused mainly on
vitamin E, vitamin C, and beta-carotene. The feeling is that
antioxidants prevent oxidative damage to cholesterol, which
prevents the cholesterol from sticking to the vessel wall.
Antioxidants prevent free radical damage or oxidative damage to
the vessel and to the actual plaque that exists in your vessels.
In the past two years, some studies have called into question
the heart benefits of antioxidants. These studies are problematic
for several reasons. The HATS trial had very small numbers, which
can lead to inaccurate results. Some of the studies used high dose
beta-carotene when the consensus is now that high dose
beta-carotene can actually function as a pro-oxidant and be
damaging. Most importantly, all the negative studies did not use
good vitamin E. In contrast, the Cambridge Heart Antioxidant Study
used d-alpha Tocopheryl Sussinate Acid and showed a 70% reduction
in heart disease. Any study which seeks to see the real benefits
of vitamin E must use at least 400 IU of d-alpha Tocopheryl
Sussinate Acid because it is the most potent and biologically
active vitamin E. The studies should all include the sister
tocopherols as there is synergistic benefit with the alpha
Tocopheryl. DLUAF is designed like nature so includes these sister
compounds.
Antioxidants Prevent A Variety Of Cancers
Free radicals have been proven to cause a variety of cancers.
They do this by several mechanisms. One mechanism is that they
damage genetic code. Your genetic code is your DNA, which is
protein that is stored in the nucleus or brains of the cell. Free
radicals attack the DNA and cause problems. Damaged DNA means that
the cell has lost part of its brains. It will be unable to
function like a normal cell. One of the functions of normal cells
is to fix mistakes that can occur during replication of cells.
This function could be lost when the DNA is damaged and the cell
replicates a mutated cell. This mutated cell could replicate
itself and eventually form a tumor. Another way damaged DNA causes
cancer is that the cell directly gives rise to an abnormal cell
when its DNA is damaged. There are whole books devoted to the
various mechanisms by which free radicals induce cancer.
Antioxidants Are Proven To Help Prevent The Development Of
Cancer.
Please view the java pop up screens on each DLUAF ingredient in
the Formula page. Educate yourself on the different cancers that
each antioxidant can help prevent. The cancer information is too
extensive to place here, as it could fill an entire book. The
important message is that specific antioxidants can prevent
specific cancers and that the more and varied antioxidants you
have, the better protection you will enjoy.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and an
excellent example of how cancer can be prevented. Several
antioxidants have been proven to help prevent prostate cancer in
internationals studies and trials from leading universities,
including Harvard, and Johns’ Hopkins. These include vitamin E,
lycopene, and selenium. Lycopene is the red pigment that comes
from tomatoes, watermelon and other red fruits. It has powerful
antioxidant effects and prevents prostate, endometrial, cervical,
and pancreatic cancer.
Lycopene was found to be protective of prostate cancer by
Harvard researchers. They discovered that the lycopene had to be
processed or cooked. Men who ate 7 or more servings per week of
processed tomatoes (pasta sauce) had a 34% reduced incidence of
prostate cancer. An important concept here is that you need the
lycopene in a form you can absorb. Eating a raw tomato is not
helpful; the cell wall must be mashed so the lycopene is
accessible. This is also an example of how a supplement can
provide better access to the desired plant compound than a natural
vegetable.
Vitamin E was found to be protective for prostate cancer in
several studies. Researchers and Johns’ Hopkins found that the
gamma-tocopherol was much more protective than the alpha-tocopherol.
This is important as the majority of vitamin E supplements
available contain only alpha-tocopheryl. DLUAF was designed like
nature and contains the important sister compound gamma-
tocopherol.
A variety of antioxidants have been proven to prevent a variety
of cancers. This is the reason that diversity of antioxidants is
so important.
Antioxidants Prevent Blindness
Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of
blindness as one ages. Several studies have shown that various
antioxidants can help prevent macular degeneration from ever
occurring, and can halt the progression when it does exist.
The Age-Related Eye Diseases Studies AREDS 12/2001 confirmed
that daily use of vitamin C, E, beta-carotene, and zinc slowed
progression in people with moderate to advanced macular
degeneration.
Dr. Levine’s Ultimate Antioxidant Formula ™ provides
ultimate antioxidant protection against this and other types of
blindness. DLUAF is complete protection. The AREDS study did not
even look at Lutein and Zeaxanthin- carotinoids that were proven
in several previous studies to be the two strongest supplements to
combat age-related macular degeneration.
DLUAF offers the most comprehensive vision protection. It
contains the vitamin C, E, beta- carotene, and zinc found in the
AREDS study. It also contains Lutein and Zeaxanthin as well as
Bilberry (cousin of the blueberry-which is well known for its
vision benefits). Bilberry contains Anthocyanidins – strong
plant compounds that protect cells and prevent oxidation. DLUAF
also contains multi-Anthocyanidins from a variety of berries that
further protect your vision. In addition, DLUAF also contains
alpha- Lipoic Acid which can regenerate spent vitamin C and E to
further protect macular cells. And finally, DLUAF contains
Lycopene, which is protective against macular degeneration. There
is no better or more comprehensive formula to protect your vision.
Researchers agree that cataracts are caused by oxidative damage
and they believe that antioxidants can help prevent cataract
formation and/or progression. UV radiation (free radicals)
increases your risk of cataracts.
Several previous studies found Lutein and Zeaxanthin are the
two strongest plant compounds that prevent macular degeneration.
Antioxidants Strengthen The Immune System
Researchers agree that several different antioxidants improve
and protect the immune system. This is one of the means by which
antioxidants prevent cancer. By strengthening the immune
system, cancer is prevented. If you have cancer, strengthening
the immune system allows your body to fight cancer and a
strengthened immune system can even kill cancer completely.
Cervical cancer represents a good example of how a virus can
cause cancer. Human papillomavirus infection of the cervix leads
to cervical cancer. Not every woman whose cervix is in contact
with the papilloma virus gets infected and not every infected
cervix develops cervical cancer. Some women have stronger immune
systems and prevent the initial infection by the virus. Other
women who get infected may fight off the papilloma virus and
prevent it from developing into cervical cancer. Strengthening the
immune system can prevent infection by the virus in the first
place. Cryptoxanthin is a sister carotinoid found in nature with
beta-carotene. High blood levels of Cryptoxanthin can prevent
cervical cancer. DLUAF contains this unique carotinoid.
The benefits of antioxidants are too numerous to list here and
the list grows weekly. New benefits of various antioxidants are
being discovered daily. Large books are written on the subject.
